Sheikhul Azhar ke 43



Prof Dr Ahmad Tayyib, Presiden Al Azhar sebagai Sheikhul Azhar yang baru menggantikan Al Marhum Dr. Muhammad Sayyid al-Tantawi yang telah pergi ke rahmatullah baru baru ini.

Prof Dr Ahmad Tayyib adalah Sheikhul Azhar yang ke 43 dalam sejarah Al Azhar.

1 - On his first day in office the new Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayyib, has condemned Israeli aggression on the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He described the Judaisation and aggression currently taking place in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa courtyard, as an attack on its Islamic identity and as a criminal act that should not go unpunished by either the international community or by Muslims that have a duty to defend the mosque and other Holy Islamic sites in Palestine.


2 - CAIRO (AFP)Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Friday appointed a new head of Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's most prestigious institution, after the death of its top cleric last week, the official MENA agency reported.

Mubarak, who is recovering from surgery in Germany, "has issued a presidential decree appointing Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed al-Tayeb to head Al-Azhar," MENA reported.

Tayeb, president of Al-Azhar University since 2003, succeeds Grand Imam Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, who died of a heart attack in Saudi Arabia on March 10 at the age of 81.

Al-Azhar institution -- which groups a 10th century mosque, a university and several affiliated schools -- is Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning. Its role is to propagate Islamic teachings and culture around the world.

French-educated Tayeb, who is in his 60s, also held the post of Grand Mufti, the country's most senior Islamic scholar, until September 2003.


3 - Cairo- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak issued Friday a presidential decree appointing Ahmed el-Tayyip as the Grand Imam of al-Azhar.

Ahmed el-Tayyip was serving as al-Azhar University President. Late Grand Imam of al-Azhar Mohamed Sayyed Tantawi breathed his last earlier this month in Riyadh.

Al-Azhar institution, which includes a 10th century mosque, a university and several affiliated schools, is Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning. Its role is to propagate Islamic teachings and culture around the world.
